Good story, irritating author I liked this book because it was like an adventure from my chair. Through this book I visited places I'll never visit in real life. It's essentially a book of essays, but told in a way that it kind of weaves a whole story. His descriptions are interesting and it's a fun ride.But I never looked forward to it and had to force myself to finish. The author himself kept getting in the way of his own stories. I'm not even talking about his political rants (which I expected and were interesting to consider, even if I didn't always agree). I felt like I was listening to a teenager trying to impress me with how he's so rough and rugged, that he can hike 40 miles in 2 days fueled only by a can of beans and a blade of grass and half a bottle of water. I strained my eyes from rolling them too many times.Being there... OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".Read this to fill your soul I heard about this book at a party and just the way people talked about it fascinated me! These guys are true wanderers and adventurers, not big readers, and they LOVED this book. I heard that it was hard to get into because it is a memoir by a man who moved to almost completely undeveloped National Park in the desert and fell in love with it and wrote about it. The incredible thing is, he turned out to be a prolific writer who loved his subject and expresses his love in such moving, lyrical yet unsentimental and masculine fashion that you can't help but fall in love too.I am a huge annotator of books, and love to highlight and mark comments next to passages in all my books that I want to return to. The whole book is like that for me. Every sentence shows the rare, sublime mystery of shadows, lights, passing moments of a living and breathing planet that accepts and watches all who travel through, inviting them to delve into the secrets and profound truths that only the wilderness can teach us. Now more than ever, we need to remember why America is so unutterably fragile, beautiful and worth protecting.

It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades as they faced challenges, forged alliances, and used their intellects to change their own lives - and their country's future.

Masterful, well-written, and leaves you wanting more! Hidden Figures has garnered much attention for being the heretofore forgotten story of the African-American women who helped build NASA (or to be more exact, the NASA field center at Langley). The media has boiled the tale of these women down to the oft-used cliche "heroes"; Shetterley's narrative digs beyond that.Sure, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, et al are amazing, inspiring, and strong, but their own modesty over their roles in NACA/NASA history is telling: like many black pioneers of the Jim Crow era, they didn't step up for the attention or accolades. They stepped up to be "the first" in order to pave the way for those who would come behind them.Shetterley deftly reveals these cross-generational ties at Langley, as well as how for African-Americans, the professional is often the personal when it came to representation and community. The portions of the book that were the most fascinating to me were those pertaining to the links forged by the black community in the Southern Virginia area, and how they intersected with employment and residency in Hampton as the 20th century progressed.Shetterley's prose shined the best on the minutia of the women's lives, but the parts about NACA/NASA were just as interesting--and Shetterley's explanations of the mathematics and aeronautics is masterful. It was never pedantic, yet never overly simplified. As I reached the end, I was disappointed there weren't more pages, but also even hungrier for more stories about the intersection of race, gender, and science!Get this book! It is an excellent companion to Nathalia Holt's Rise of the Rocket Girls and Lily Koppel's The Astronaut Wives Club, for a comparison of the different experiences of women in the Space Race.Enjoy The Pie! My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroadyFascinating book; very different from the movie I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating.That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance.One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.

GO buy/rent this book and see for yourself!!Van Wilder meets Supernatural Van Wilder meets Supernatural! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I loved it all. There’s humor (Cass and Molly take the cake), all kinds of supernaturals, a kick butt storyline, and an exceedingly hot yet gentle Alpha. I raced through reading it and really enjoyed how it managed to both make me laugh and keep me caught up in the tension. The writing was well done and held a casual tone that left me feeling like I was there and a part of their group. I loved the ending and can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book!2.5 Stars - Only Half a Book This is a pretty fun story, lots of funny moment and plenty of "adult" oriented entertainment (sex, cussing, drinking, etc). The writing isn't half bad, kept me interested and I wanted to know what would happen next. So, why only 2.5 stars (amazon only allows full stars)? Because this is sold as a book with a full story, and it is NOT.There are no resolutions to any of the questions asked, there is no defeat of the big bad, no resolution on the HEA, nothing. The story even ends on a cliff hanger. Due to this I do Not recommend reading this book until the second book is available.Final Thoughts: The eventual story might be great, but we wont know until it's complete. Not recommended until then.

Philippians 4:6 encourages the believer to "be anxious for nothing". As Lucado states, the Apostle Paul seems to leave little leeway here. "Be anxious of nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero."

What's he suggesting? That we should literally be anxious for absolutely nothing? Lucado says, "The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is optional. It's the life of perpetual anxiety that Paul wants to address. Don't let anything in life leave you perpetually in angst."

Americans especially know about living in perpetual anxiety. According to one research program, anxiety-related issues are the number one mental health problem among women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men. Stress-related ailments cost the nation $300 billion every year in medical bills and lost productivity. And use of sedative drugs like Xanax and Valium have skyrocketed in the last 15 years. Even students are feeling it. One psychologist reports that the average high school kid today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s.

"The news about our anxiety is enough to make us anxious," says Lucado. But there's a prescription for dealing with it. Lucado invites listeners into a study of Philippians 4:6-7, the most highlighted passage of any book on the planet, according to Amazon:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

"With his help you will learn to face the calamities of life. You'll learn how to talk yourself off the ledge. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will learn to view bad news through the lens of sovereignty, to discern the lies of Satan and tell yourself the truth. Anxious For Nothing "Anxious For Nothing" is yet another great Max Lucado title. This one, as the title mentions, focuses on anxiety. Around 160 pages, the book is a quick read and addresses such topics as:1. Realizing the Lord is in control, regardless our situation.2. The importance of abiding in Jesus during our trial.3. The importance of prayer during our struggle.4. You have the power to choose on what to think about, good or bad.5. Learn to be grateful during your struggle - surely there is something good that can come out of it.6. Realized how merciful and loving God is to us, regardless our circumstances.7. Fret less and believe in Jesus more.A great read for anyone going through a struggle and in need of hope. You should be able to complete title in a few sittings and come away with more encouragement and hope that is found only in Jesus.Simple but Profound I don't know for sure but I suspect that most adults struggle with anxiety to some extent. There are a lot of potential things to be stressed about in this world - some which can easily be dismissed logically, but many that are genuine concerns that probably will happen. Since this is a universal problem there are many Christian books out there on how to combat anxiety. When amazon vine offered me a book by Max Lucado I was happy to take it. I could use some help in this area of my life. I've read a few by this author. I know he has a solid, Biblical worldview.I expected this to be an encouraging, somewhat lightweight, book that I could enjoy for a few hours, take a little bit out of, and pass along for someone else to enjoy. My first impression of the book did not sway me from this view. The main section is only about 150 pages long, with a good amount of pages blank (between chapters) or devoted to a single large quote. I hate that sort of thing in a book but, oh well, I didn't pay for this anyway.To my slight surprise, despite the blank or 3/4 empty pages, this is a substantial treatment on the subject. Yes, it is encouraging, full of anecdotes and easy to read but it contains practical steps on combatting anxiety. Based on Philippians 4: 4-8 the author patiently dissects a very powerful passage of scripture and shows you exactly what you need to do to derive maximum benefit from these verses.I normally don't think much one way or the other when it comes to the use of acronyms when it comes to teaching (I can't remember a single one to be honest) but Max uses the acronym CALM as a teaching tool to show how to apply these verses.C - Celebrate God's Goodness - "Rejoice in the Lord Always"A - Ask God For Help - "Let your requests be made known to God"L - Leave Your Concerns With Him - "With Thanksgiving"M - Meditate On Good Things - "Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise"He breaks down each verse into understandable concepts that work in real life. I believe I will actually use this acronym to remind myself of the principles here. This is not a heavy theological book. These are simple real-life-applicable instructions for anyone who is willing to apply it. Medicine for a universal ailment. If you take the medicine you will see results. If you acknowledge the truth of the medicine but don't take it you will not see results. If you take a lower dosage, less often you will see lesser results. Surprisingly I have underlined many of the passages in this book that I plan to read over and over. I hope to get this type of thinking into my daily life until it becomes unconscious. Very much like the Gospel, this book will be of great benefit to anyone who simply receives it.Some personal thoughts before I go:One particular passage moved me greatly: "The benefit of being a great sinner is dependence upon a great grace. I found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. I have never been more or less saved than the moment I was first saved. Not one bad deed has deducted from my salvation. No good deed, if there are any, has enhanced it. My salvation has nothing to do with my work and everything to do with the finished work of Christ on the cross."This is absolute truth. If you are a believer you should know one thing: God will never be angry with you again. He swore that in Isaiah 54, which comes after you believe in what happened in Isaiah 53. God has a Covenant of Peace with you that will never, ever be removed. When we get that deep down in our souls most of our anxiety will effortlessly evaporate.

A Fun, Fast Read Sh*t my Dad Says was so fun, I read this book in two days. Accessible, relatable, and absolutely hilarious, the book chronicles highlights from the author’s life though his father’s unusual, typically vulgar viewpoint. There are brief shorts and quippy vignettes, which makes this a great book to read during limited available reading periods. Well-written, poignant, and entertaining, there’s not much to say other than growing up with this dad must have been a riot.Fun Little Book! Ha!This book is hilarious. I loved it.The author details his life in a refreshingly open and honest way, while keeping the hilarious sayings his dad comes up with at the fore.And his dad's sayings are... AWESOME! Brutal honesty mixed with plenty of foul language makes for some hilarious one-liners. But, once you get a little deeper into the book and understand how much the dad loves his boy, the funny sayings take on a weird sweetness that I just can't explain.I'm an old crusty, 43 year old dude with great hair and a thing for bacon, but as I read this book, I pictured myself at the same age as the author in each of the stories, and wished my dad had been as brutally honest with me as his was with him. Man, the trouble a little honesty would have saved me!The book is very short, not sure of the page count, but the actual book is small in size and not very long. Which is unfortunate, I could read Halpern's stuff all day long. I read it in one short sitting and immediately wanted more.In fact, I pre-ordered his follow-up effort "I Suck At Girls" before I got up from reading the book. It's that funny. The good news is, the second book was as good as the first!Thanks, Halperns! You guys are awesome.Now, how do I shower my boys (three and five) with the same brutal honesty I admired so much in this book without my wife bouncing a skillet off my skull?Hilarious I couldn't put this down. If you are offended by language, the title of the book should tell you what you're getting into, but this is some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. Justin Halpern is downright hilarious and has sarcasm and charisma oozing from his words as he retells more stories about his dad and his own life than I have in my entire family. It's almost hard to believe that it's all true, but I sorta hope it is, and he swears it is. I would randomly send quotes from this book to my friends and they'd laugh hard without even understanding where it came from. Once I explained where I got the quotes, they all went and read the book and all have said they've loved it (which is weird since my friends rarely read). Read the descriptions of the book and you get that on every. single. page. He makes fun of himself as much as he talks about his dad, and it's awesome. I can't recommend it enough!
